Weather / season tips
- Layers always. Lake Superior makes its own weather; mornings can be foggy or 20° cooler than inland forecasts.
- Winter: Ice, black ice on Highway 61, and lake-effect snow are real. Allow extra drive time; keep an ice scraper and flashlight in the car. Check Lutsen Mountains and MnDOT cameras before skiing or waterfall stops.
- Spring melt: Trails can be muddy and icy — waterproof boots beat sneakers.
- Summer: Bugs (especially mosquitoes/black flies early summer) — bring repellent for evening walks.
- Fall: Peak color draws crowds to Oberg and the gondola — go early for parking and light.
- Cell service: Spotty in valleys and inland forests. Download offline maps; don’t rely on streaming for navigation in the woods.
- Wildlife: Give moose, bears, and deer space — especially at dusk on Highway 61.
If you need help
- Life-threatening emergency: Call 911.
- Nearest hospital ER: North Shore Health (Grand Marais) — Cook County’s critical-access hospital with 24/7 emergency care. Roughly a half-hour drive in good conditions; longer in storms. Call 911 for ambulance rather than self-driving if unsure.
- Non-emergency stay issues (lockout help process, appliances, heat, Wi-Fi): Message us on Airbnb or Vrbo — we monitor those threads for guests.
- Do not post codes, Wi-Fi passwords, or the street address in public reviews or social posts.
